Canada's prime minister Stephen Harper was in Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T. on Aug. 26, where he surprised everyone by driving an all-terrain vehicle up and down an airfield runway.
Harper unexpectedly donned a helmet and drove off on the ATV Thursday afternoon before boarding a C130-J Hercules from Tuktoyaktuk to Whitehorse, Yukon.
Other vehicles and ATVs tried to stay with him as he accelerated up and down the runway on the all-terrain vehicle.
When he drove back to the plane and parked, a reporter asked whether the prime minister had a licence.
"I think I make the rules," Harper joked.
Earlier in the day, he had announced that Ottawa is setting aside around 1,800 square kilometres that spans three sections of the Mackenzie River Delta for belugas.
"Today we are ensuring these Arctic treasures are preserved for generations to come," Harper said in a statement.
The Tarium Niryutait Marine Protected Area is the eighth of its kind across the country, but the first in the Arctic.
On Wednesday, Harper observed Canadian troops participating in Operation Nanook near the Nunavut community of Resolute. He also met with local residents who had been forcibly relocated to the area by the government in the 1950s, presenting each of them with a copy of the official apology.
