Danish negotiators will participate in International Whaling Commission meetings next week in Anchorage, Alaska with a mandate to support sustainable commercial whaling.
Danish lawmakers gave the foreign minister, Per Stig Møller, a mandate Wednesday to negotiate for a repeal of the 20-year ban on commercial whaling.
After meeting with parliament's Environment Committee, Møller said the country's negotiatiors would head to the meetings ready to support controlled commercial whaling.
"In my opinion we have a broad support for scientific, regulated whaling that ensures sustainability," Møller said.
Denmark represents Greenland in the IWC. Sofia Rossen Greenland's representative in the Danish parliament, expressed her satisfaction with the prime minister's position.
She also expects that will be granted its requested quota for whales caught by traditional subsistence whalers.
