Denmark's future Arctic command centre must obviously be in Greenland, Greenland's premier Kuupik Kleist told a Copenhagen hearing on security challenges in the Arctic on Aug. 25, Sermitsiaq reports.
Nuuk would be the best spot for the command centre which will oversee the increasing amount of activity in and around Greenland, he said, which will require much closer cooperation between military and civilian authorities.
This applies both to the increased maritime traffic with cruise ships and transport-based navigation, but also the growing oil exploration activity, he said.
"It is natural that it should be in Greenland," Kleist said.
On Aug. 28 Denmark's parliamentary defense committee starts a week-long trip in Greenland where they will look at options for the location of the Arctic command.
