Number of Russian visitors tanks in Finland
The fall can be almost entirely attributed to a downswing in the number of travellers visiting from neighbouring Russia.

The number of foreign travellers visiting Finland this year has fallen by about one-tenth. In January, the number of overnight stays by foreign tourists was down by nine per cent as compared to January of 2009.

The fall can be almost entirely attributed to a downswing in the number of travellers visiting from neighbouring Russia, YLE says.

Russian visitors are overwhelmingly the largest group of tourists, accounting for nearly half of all overnight stays by foreigners in Finland in January.

The next largest groups are British and German tourists, whose numbers also declined. Only the number of travellers from Estonia, the Netherlands and the USA rose from last year's levels.

Domestic tourism by Finns has remained more or less steady.

The figures are from preliminary data gathered by Statisics Finland.
