Norways Minister of Fisheries Helga Pedersen is considering action against Iceland- stripping Icelandic ships of their fishing licenses- for having allocated a unilateral 112,000-tonne mackerel quota.
That would mean that all Icelandic ships that have ever caught mackerel would be barred from catching any type of fish in Norwegian waters, Fréttabladid reports.
Other methods under consideration include placing an embargo on fishmeal and fish oil imported from Iceland.
The Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners (LÍÚ) has requested that Icelands Minister of Fisheries Steingrímur J. Sigfússon meet with his Norwegian counterpart to find a solution to the mackerel dispute.
While the presence of mackerel in Icelandic waters has increased in recent years, Iceland is not part of a multi-national agreement on the division of the mackerel quota.
