Inspectors from the Russian Technical Control Authority (Rostekhnadzor) say Norilsk Nickel will be forced to pay even more fines for its extensive pollution, the Barents Observer says.
The inspections followed complaints to officials about the companys high level of emissions.
This week, the head of the Siberian unit of the Rostekhnadzor, Leonid Baklitskii, said that his inspectors have concluded that Norilsk Nickel will have to pay for its industrial discharges.
The environmental fines will likely apply both for the companys plants in Siberia and in the Kola Peninsula
"The company today actually understands that the level of harmful emissions exceeds what has previously been reported. Therefore we have a re-calculation going on," Baklitskii said.
He said Rostekhnadzor and Norilsk Nickel are to sign a protocol on industrial safety and protection of the environment.
Norilsk Nickel says the company is in the process of improving management of its mining activities, as well as industrial safety and environmental protection, Newsru.com reports.
