Rousseff rejected the U.S. government reasoning that the NSA surveillance was aimed at detecting suspected terrorist activity and she accused the agency of engaging in industrial espionage. Rousseff said she had asked Washington for explanations, an apology and promises the surveillance would never be repeated. Postponing the state visit was a rare and diplomatically severe snub by Brazil. While foreign leaders frequently visit the White House, state visits are reserved for special occasions and include an elaborate state dinner. No new date has been set. Rousseffs state visit was conceived to highlight cooperation between the two biggest economies in the Americas and Brazils emergence over the past decade as a regional power. Ties between the United States and Brazil had been improving steadily since Rousseff took office in 2011. The cancellation could harm cooperation on trade, regional affairs and other issues at a time of growing influence from China, which has surpassed the United States as Brazils leading trade partner. The trip had been seen as a platform for deals on oil exploration and biofuels technology, and Brazils potential purchase of fighter jets from Chicago-based Boeing Co. A report by Brazil Globos news program Fantastico on National Security Agency spying was based on documents that journalist Glenn Greenwald obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Greenwald, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the journalists to first report Snowdens leaks of classified information on previously secret U.S. telephone and internet surveillance efforts. The report also said the United States intercepted communications of Brazilian state oil company Petrobras and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto before he assumed office.
The Great Disconnect: United States Debt Vs. Growth
The prohibition on establishment was for the Federal Government, disallowing it to force a specific religion upon any state. It was not a law against religion or religious expression by government officials or in government owned properties. Second, the wording was not meant to suggest that all religions have the same footing. Some want to suggest the framers wanted to give equal regard to Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindis and so on. In fact, the wording suggested by George Mason, often called “the Father of the Bill of Rights”, was thus: “All men have an equal, natural and unalienable right to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that no particular sect or society of Christians ought to be favored or established by law in preference to others…” This suggests a preference toward the Christian religion, just not toward any one denomination over another. Many saw the problems in England caused by the break between the Anglican Church and the Catholic. Third, consider another portion of the Constitution, in which one reads: If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it… (Article I, Section 7). Why should Sundays be excepted if there is no regard for religion within the Constitution? And if it is not for the Christian religion, why “Sunday”? For Jews it would be Saturday. For Muslims, it would be Friday. But it specifies Sunday – the day of worship for Christians. A closing clause to the Constitution, immediately following Article VII, states this: “Done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven…” The year of our Lord? It seems the framers of the Constitution used the Christian form of dating history , suggesting Jesus the Christ’s place in history.
Congress that is heating up. The U.S. debt has climbed to $16.95 trillion. Many individuals will blame President Obama for the large increase in debt, but in all fairness every U.S. president has raised the debt ceiling. The only thing that could bring down the current U.S. debt would be economic growth, but unfortunately when a country grows at 2.0 percent a year it is very difficult to bring down the U.S. debt in a meaningful way. The number of people in the United States receiving benefits from theSupplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps)is now just over 47 million. Then there is the money spent on wars and other conflicts, some experts say that the Iraq war cost over $3 trillion alone. Is all of this spending by the United States government ever going to stop? How can a country in so much debt continue to spend money it does not have? At this time, that does not seem to matter. The stock markets remains at or near all time highs. The markets do not seem to be worried about the weak U.S. economy, the debt, the people on public assistance, or the wars. When the stock market starts to panic that will be the time to worry that the problems are becoming to big too handle.
